Remembering Ted Hall
Ted Hall was an extraordinary person and Harbor Care was privileged to have him serve on our board from 2006-2012, including as Board Chair.
During this time, and under Ted’s leadership as Board Chair, Harbor Care experienced some of its most significant accomplishments in its 40-year history. This includes opening two transitional housing facilities for veterans experiencing homelessness, including the first-of-its-kind facility serving female veterans and families. In 2009, Ted participated in the opening of the Harbor Care Health & Wellness Center in downtown Nashua, providing critical medical care to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Today, our Health & Wellness Center serves more than 2,000 individuals living in poverty, providing medical, dental, mental health care and substance use treatment services. The opening of our two transitional housing facilities for veterans laid the foundation for the effective end of veteran homelessness in greater Nashua in 2017.
These achievements are part of Ted’s legacy. Yet, even more significant, is Ted’s and the Hall family’s commitment to addressing the stigmas of mental health. Ted’s grandmother, Betty Hall was one of the original founders of Harbor Care, then Harbor Homes, whose purpose was to provide housing and supports for individuals with severe mental illness. Ted long championed the importance of shattering the stigmas and creating a safe, welcoming space to foster mental health in a positive way.
In 2021, Ted returned to Nashua and Harbor Care’s original housing residence, now the Betty Hall House, to lead a remembrance celebration for his mother and grandmother. In closing, he led the gathering in singing this Irish Round, a very fitting tribute to Ted as well:
May troubles be less and blessings be more
And nothing but happiness come to your door
And may you have luck wherever you roam
Your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow
May wind be at your back
And sun be overhead
Good friends be at your side
Wherever you are led
