Cynthia Day Family Center for Women and Children

Substance use disorder is hard on mothers and expectant mothers, who face not only great stigma and high rates of postpartum depression, but who also live in fear of losing their children. As a single-mom, especially, it can be hard to find the time, childcare, and transportation to get help.

The Cynthia Day Family Center offers a unique set services, including specialized residential and outpatient treatment programs designed to meet the recovery needs of pregnant, parenting, and post-partum women and their young children. Services help women enter recovery, become self-sufficient, and care for their families. Please contact us for a confidential, over-the-phone assessment to help you determine what path towards recovery is the best way forward, based on your unique needs.

How It Works

Cynthia Day is well-known in New Hampshire for her dedication to substance use treatment. Named in her honor, the Cynthia Day Family Center (CDFC) provides a holistic, family-centered treatment approach for women with a substance use disorder while allowing them to care for their young children.

In our high-intensity residential programming, women and their children live on-site. There, mothers receive clinically-intensive rehab treatment in a secure, home-like environment and learn to better care for themselves and their new families. Our outpatient programming offers intensive outpatient services as well as individualized treatments. These include one-on-one and family counseling, as well as other services. Outpatient services are integrated with women’s health and pediatrics primary care services, oral health care services, psychiatry, and mental health care.

The CDFC attends to all levels of recovery. Our facility is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is staffed by licensed clinical professionals. Our substance use disorder treatment services are gender-specific, evidence-based, and clinically intensive.

Location

Services occur at Keystone Hall, our residential substance use disorder rehab treatment center, located at 615 Amherst St., Nashua, and at our Harbor Care Health and Wellness Center at 45 High St. in Nashua. Hours vary by location.

Qualifications, Cost, and Application

The program works with women in New Hampshire who are experiencing a substance use disorder and are pregnant and/ or parenting. It is not necessary that children be in a mother’s custody; however, parental rights should not have been terminated at time of application. Thanks to the support of many donors and funders, we offer care to all those in need, including those without insurance or ability to pay for services, using a sliding fee scale based on income. We accept most insurances, including Medicaid and private insurance. Please contact us with any questions about insurance or payment, or to schedule an appointment with our Patient Navigator, who can help you understand and apply for any insurance you may be eligible to receive.

 Medication Assisted Treatment

In the best of circumstances, ending opioid or alcohol addiction is a difficult, painful process. In the most challenging of circumstances, the addictions are almost impossible to overcome. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is often a critical tool that, when combined with therapy and other supports, can help a person enter into and maintain recovery. If you or someone you know might benefit from Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services, contact us today to learn more about how we can help.

How It Works

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a proven, effective treatment. In MAT, clients receive medication sometimes daily or monthly that curbs cravings and the body’s need for opioids or alcohol. For many, it reduces:

  • Relapse, compared to abstinence-only (“going cold turkey”)

  • Cravings

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep disturbances

Our MAT team, comprised of Medical Doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, licensed social workers, medical assistants, and recovery support workers, structures treatment to meet the patient’s needs or goals. A multi-pronged approach helps patients achieve—and sustain—recovery. Patients may be encouraged to pursue other treatments, such as:

  • Residential rehab treatment

  • Outpatient counseling or behavioral therapy

  • Intensive Outpatient treatment

Patients in these programs have access to MAT.

Treatment Medications

Our medication may include:

  • Suboxone

  • Subutex

  • Vivitrol

  • Subclade

Harbor Care High Intensity Outpatient Services: A Bridge to Recovery

Intensive Outpatient Care for Substance Use Disorders

At Harbor Care, our High Intensity Outpatient Program (HIOP) offers a structured and supportive environment for individuals seeking recovery from substance use. Our program provides a balanced approach to treatment, combining the intensity of inpatient care with the flexibility of outpatient services.

What is a High Intensity Outpatient Program?

A High Intensity Outpatient program, also known as day treatment, is an intensive form of outpatient rehab that allows you to live at home while receiving daily treatment. At Harbor Care, our High Intensity Outpatient Services typically involves treatment for 3 to 7 days per week in 6- to 8-hour time blocks, offering a level of care that is more intensive than traditional outpatient programs but less intensive than inpatient treatment.

Who Can Benefit from High Intensity Outpatient Services?

Our PHP is suited for individuals who:

  • Have completed detox or do not require it.

  • Do not need 24-hour supervision but still require a structured treatment environment.

  • Have a supportive home environment or access to sober living arrangements.

  • Are able to commit to regular and intensive treatment sessions.

How It Works

Outpatient Programs include licensed clinicians and addiction specialists delivering evidence-based, trauma-informed services that are gender-specific and customized to each client’s unique needs. In general, services help clients and patients address a wide rage of topics including, relapse prevention and recovery, trauma issues, and even anger management and a driver intervention program.

Specific Services Include:

  • Adult and youth one-on-one counseling and therapy.

  • Group Outpatient Program Counseling (OP).

  • Group Intensive Outpatient Counseling (IOP).

  • Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), for opioid and/or alcohol dependency, and specialized groups.

  • Yoga, Acupuncture, and other holistic integrative services.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

  • Substance Use Disorder/Dual Diagnosis evaluations.

  • Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor (LADC) evaluations.

  • Specialized services for:

  • Recovery Support, Alumni Groups, and Aftercare.

The Difference Between High Intensity Outpatient Program (HIOP) and IOP

While HIOP and IOP are both structured outpatient treatments, HIOP offers greater intensity, requiring more weekly programming hours and offering a broader range of therapies. It's ideal for those needing more support than IOP yet maintaining some independence. Outpatient Programs, staffed by licensed professionals, provide personalized, evidence-based care focusing on various issues like relapse prevention, trauma, and anger management.

 Rockingham County Drug Court

Drug Courts offer an alternative to prison sentencing for drug-related offenses. Rather than prison time, participants get substance abuse treatment and additional supports in a supervised manner. The program is extremely effective, and provides the rehabilitation services clients need to get well.

How It Works

In partnership with the NH Department of Justice, Harbor Care and Keystone Hall work with the Rockingham County Drug Court to provide treatment services that are appropriate for clients and that comply with court orders.

New Hampshire’s Drug Courts redirect individuals from the prison system to treatment services. Under the supervision of a judge and parole officer, participants meet recovery workers, while they live and work in the community. Connected with their families and others supports, participants are much more capable of sustaining life-long recovery.

Given the expense of prison, Drug Courts are seen not only as a compassionate alternative, but a cost-effective one as well. Over the last decade, nearly every county of New Hampshire has adopted a drug court program.

Location

Services are typically provided in Rockingham County.

Qualifications & Cost

The Rockingham Drug Court Program serves individuals sentenced to that program. It does not cost anything for participants.
