International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights asserts that racial discrimination is antithetical to human rights and freedoms, yet racism and racial discrimination persist around the world. The United Nations recognizes International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination every year on March 21. This March 21 marks the anniversary of when 69 peaceful anti-apartheid protestors were shot and killed by police in South Africa in 1960 (right photo). Although the formal apartheid system no longer exists in South Africa, there is much progress to be made in South Africa and in the United States. At Harbor Care, we commit to learning, speaking up, and acting against all forms of racial discrimination. Learn more here. (Erin)
International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade-March 25-28
2024 Remembrance Program | United Nations
Period of celebration: March 25-28. The transatlantic trade enslaved, abducted, trafficked, and brutally dehumanized Africans and their descendants over centuries, leaving a pernicious legacy of racism grounded in the false narrative of white supremacy. A critical way to counter racism with justice is to acknowledge the fundamental dignity, equality, and rights of people of African descent within communities, institutions, policies, laws and governing bodies.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will display a new exhibit “Ibo Landing” (above) to highlight tragic and resilient story of the Igbo people in defiance of enslavement. The exhibit will be on display near the Vienna Café at United Nations Headquarters in New York. (Jaimeika)
International Day of Transgender Visibility
Transgender Day, March 31, is dedicated to honoring the resilience and achievements of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals worldwide. Let's use this moment to amplify their voices, advocate for their rights, and foster inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive regardless of gender identity. Together, let's stand in solidarity with the transgender community, including Harbor Care colleagues and clients, as we continue to work towards a more equitable and accepting world for all. Tartan Day
April 6: Tartan Day is celebration of Scottish heritage and the cultural contributions of Scottish and Scottish-diaspora figures of history. The name refers to tartan, a patterned, woolen cloth associated with Scotland. (Christine)
