Dawn’s Journey of Recovery and Transformation

“There are no words to describe how blessed I feel to be able to have this second chance.

If I hadn’t changed I’d probably be dead or in jail.”

- Dawn

As Dawn and her family celebrate the holidays, she’s filled with joy, and a little disbelief, by how her life has changed.

Dawn, with her children, is grateful for how community support helped change her family’s life.

Dawn is a second-year college student, and psychology major, dean’s list member with plans to pursue her master’s degree. She’s also a proud mom of three kids. Yet, for nearly two decades Dawn had no direction. She battled addiction, and homelessness.

Every day, Harbor Care’s frontline housing teams encounter individuals like Dawn who are in crisis. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we provide stable housing, critical supports, and hope.

Dawn wanted a better life for her kids and herself. She knew something had to change. In desperate need of stability, and a safe place to live, Dawn reached out to Harbor Care for help.

Today, nearly three years sober, and living in stable housing with her kids, Dawn is thriving. She has a 3.9 GPA at Southern New Hampshire University with a career goal of becoming a forensic psychologist. “I want to help people.”

Because of critical stability and supports, Dawn has been empowered, reimagining what is possible for herself and her family.

“I’ve never lived in my own house. My family always rented growing up. I can’t wait to be able to give my spot up (in supportive housing) to someone else who needs it.”

For over forty years, with community support, Harbor Care has built a service model that ends homelessness and changes lives. Together, we help individuals and families move into stable housing and provide them with medical, dental, and mental healthcare, substance use treatment, employment services, and other vital supports that lay the foundation for lasting change. It starts with the dignity of a home.
